Readers’ response to contractor’s tip received with thanks

We have received some negative feedback from The Cable Guy section in the February – March issue of Electrical Gems. The article described the practice of holding a contactor in with an insulated screwdriver.

The readers that replied pointed out that the practice of holding a contactor in would not be an everyday occurrence, and testing on the circuit would have to be carried out before and after the operation.

Yet as an ex-sparkie called out to a breakdown at 2am by a customer in the food industry, I had to do this procedure (when parts could not be obtained until morning) otherwise the pies would not have rolled out.

We are aware also that any procedure in the electrical field, whether done by an apprentice or tradesperson, needs to be a safe practice.

It’s great to know that contractors, ex-contractors and electricians read these articles and decide to give us some feedback. it makes us aware that the information placed in the magazine is current and worthwhile. We encourage all correspondence.

We take all comments on board and hope this clears any issues.

IMPORTANT! All tests and procedures should be checked and followed before any suggestion from The cable Guy is put into practice. electrical safety rules can vary from state to state. Every electrician should check with their local electricity authority to verify compliance.
