Crompton is one of the oldest lighting companies in the world, founded in England by Colonel Rookes Crompton, an entrepreneur with an interest in electricity. He designed and installed some of the earliest recorded electric lighting installations in the UK at places such as Windsor Castle and Kings Cross Station.

Lighting the way since 1887

Colonel Crompton’s career in engineering commenced in a partnership with the Chelmsford firm of T.H.P. Dennis & Co, manufacturers of horticultural buildings and related heating plant.

By 1878, Crompton was able to take over T.H.P. Dennis & Co’s Chelmsford premises and later formed Crompton and Co in 1887, which soon became the country’s leading distributor and manufacturer of electricity generating and lighting systems.

Tamworth, NSW, was the first town in Australia to light its streets with electricity, on 9th November,1888. Twenty three kilometres of streets were lit using 140 Swan incandescent lamps fitted into 52 former gas lights and seven Crompton 3,000 candlepower arc lights.

Crompton’s Australian operation was purchased by Electrex in 1998. Crompton then became the founding company for the publicly listed Lighting Corporation in 2000. Lighting Corporation was subsequently acquired by the Gerard Corporation in 2008 and is a member of the newly formed Gerard Lighting Group which is 100% Australian owned.

Crompton Lighting’s historic success was based on exceeding customer expectations. Crompton Lighting staff today are proud of their company’s history and continue the tradition of providing ‘Excellence in Customer Service and Satisfaction’.
